To Watermark or Not to Watermark…

Life has been busy and I’m WELL overdue for a post here on my blog.

To get my feet wet, I thought I’d keep it simple and make a quick post. This is an early morning snapshot of a small, yet trafficy birdbath in my backyard.

I’d love to get your opinion. In general, I have a love/hate relationship with the watermark. I know as a photographer I’m probably supposed to do everything I can to promote my work while simultaneously protecting my images. I know the watermark helps with both issues. I often think it takes away from the image and becomes the dominant feature.

Same image with no watermark:

What do you think ~ to watermark or not watermark? I’d love your feedback & thanks for stopping by!

Phoenix, your new site is STUNNING!! Wowie!!
You’ve GOT to watermark those beautiful images.
The reasons are simple. Pinterest is the primary reason. It’s best to show the world who belongs to that gorgeous image that they’ve pinned. Also, People WILL right click on your images and take them. So why not promote your work and remind people who it belongs to. Clients are constantly showing our images to other vendors. Primarily floral designers. It does come back to us!
I use my logo, so that it ties into my branding. Your new logo is perfect for that. It doesn’t need to be big and you can lower the opacity.
I hope you are having a lovely day!! xox

Beautiful shot! I think a watermark depends on the circumstance. If you are posting randomly online, I would, so people know where it is from and don’t use it for their own purpose. If it is just for your website, I don’t think it is necessary as long as a copyright is in the metadata. just my 3 cents:)

Phoenix McPeek Photography - May 7, 2012 - 3:05 PM

Thanks Kevin! I appreciate your 3 cents :) I always have the copyright in the metadata. I figure with pinterest, tumblr and other similar pages one’s images can end up anywhere. I suppose it can certainly help for marketing purposes too. Although, I’m not sure how may clients I would actually come from images in those places. More exposure though.

Thank you so much, Daria! <3 I so value your opinion. Pinterest is the main reason why I’m considering starting to watermark all my images. I’m going to give it a shot for a bit and see how it goes. I made a watermark brush with my new logo yesterday. I’ll post more images with that one soon. Let me know what you think. Thank you again for stopping by and sharing your valuable insight! It’s so nice to hear from you. I hope you’re doing well. Your trip out west looks like it was a blast. xoxo!

I think it depends on the photo and its purpose, for promotion I think a watermark with your website url is appropriate, and in the case above I actually like the watermark better than non, maybe the type treatment I’m drawn to, or its placement.

Thanks for your input, Lara! I can see why you would like it with the watermark better, being a web/graphic designer ‘n’ all ;) I like the idea of a web address better I think. In some ways it seems more practical. I may try that and see how it looks.

Delicious Autumn!

My favorite season is a toss up between Spring & Autumn.  I think Autumn might win by a hair. In my mind Fall has the benefit of preceding the Christmas season which I absolutely adore.  I’m one of those irritating people that gets excited rather than disgusted seeing Christmas decor in October. I’m sorry! I really can’t help it. :\ I realize a good portion of what makes Christmas so magical for me is my anticipation of it. So I embrace Fall. When the weather starts to cool and the leaves start to fall it seems I always get inspired to cook. Fortunately I know a few people who like to eat, so it works out well for all of us.

Over the past weekend I tried out a super-simple caramel apple recipe.  They were extra yummy! Below is the recipe if you feel like trying your hand at them. They only take 10-20 minutes to make. Unwrapping all those individually wrapped caramels is the most time consuming bit.

My caramel apples image was also voted as one of the most popular images and featured on allrecipes.com home page.

~ Deliciously Quick & Easy Caramel Apples ~

Ingredients

6 apples

1 (14 ounce) package individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped

2 tablespoons milk

6 craft sticks

wax paper

Directions

1. Wash apples, remove the stem from each apple and press a craft stick into the top. Place in fridge to cool while preparing the caramel.

2. Line platter with wax paper & cooking spray

3. Place caramels and milk in a microwave safe bowl, and microwave 2 to 4  minutes, stirring once. Allow to cool briefly.

4. Roll each apple quickly in caramel sauce until well coated. Place on platter & allow caramel to set.

And enjoy!

Halcyon Avenue

These are some recent photos from an ongoing personal project. I’m fascinated by old cemeteries and can easily spend hours walking around a cemetery reading tombstones. I find it very life affirming. It’s a stark reminder of the passage of time and how fleeting a human life is. Some may find it morose. I find it very interesting to consider the lives of people that may not have been thought of in a very long time.

I happened upon this little cherub with shades on.

Thanks so much for visiting my blog. I’m a bit behind on blog post but I have a ton of fun, new projects that I’ll be sharing in the coming weeks.

Wishing you much love & happiness!
